Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug. There is also a vibrant support community available at http://askubuntu.com and you might consider asking your question there.

Let's use this question to work on your problem upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. Your other problem (with Dragon Player) is separate, though it might go away once you have successfully upgraded. If not, then you should start a new question to ask about that. (If you were currently using a supported release of Ubuntu, I'd suggest you start a separate question about your Dragon Player problem now, but Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope has not been supported for quite some time.)

Since Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope is not the release immediately preceding Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx (that's Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala), nor is it the LTS release immediately preceding Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (that's Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron), upgrading directly to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx is not supported. Instead, to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx, you can upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala first, and then upgrade from that to Lucid.

If you have trouble upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic (or from Karmic to Lucid), please post here about that.

Alternatively, you might consider doing a fresh installation of Lucid (or even of a newer version). If you do that, you should make sure to back up all your files first.
