Problem updating from version10.10

Asked by Peter Jordan

Used update manager to upgrade from version10.10 to 11.04. System spent a good half an hour updating itself then on restart it told me I didn't have the hardware to run the new 11.04 system. It then reverted to the 10.10 desktop but some of the programs had updated. System monitor tells me I am on the new 11.04 kernal, Firefox has updated but am still with open office not libre office and I dont have the new desktop.
My hardware is more than adequate with 4gb ram and a dual core amd 255 black edition chip.

If I boot from the cd I burned for version11.04 and install over the update from the cd will this keep my existing files from v10.10 intact or will it overwrite them and lose my data.
Otherwise how do I sort out the update and keep my data files intact.

Peter, 11.04 now defaults to the unity desktop, however if there is a problem intialising your video card's 3D support, it will drop back to the old desktop.

What video card are you running? You can find out using the "lspci" command from a terminal. You may be using a proprietary video card which needs the drivers reinstalled.

Hi mycae, I am using a GiGabyte motherboard GA-880GMA-UD2H with its own onboard video (no dedicated video card). There was no problem running 11.04 from the live CD. The problem is somehow linked to an earlier update which the system thinks did not update satisfactorily (though I had no problems with 10.10 at all). I appear to have had only a partial upgrade. But if I go back into download manger there is nothing left to update. Hence my question Is the solution to reinstall from the live CD. However I am concerned that if i do I may lose my existing data files. The info you requested is pasted below:

Try, installing the "fglrx-installer" package; this will install the proprietary ATI drivers (fglrx), rather than relying on the open source drivers.

At this point I have to own up to not having an ATI card, so your mileage may vary.

Hi mycae, appologies for the delayed response. Have established the problem is nothing to do with my hardware or drivers. Had a spare hard drive so I installed version 11.04 from the live CD, this works perfectly.

The problem is therefore in update manager. Before upgrading to 11.04 from 10.10 there were update packages for 10.10 available. iIactivated the update for these and as far as I could tell update manager completed these. Then I pressed the upgrade button and at the end of the upgrade the system said cannot carry out upgrade as previous update failed to complete. System then carried out only a partial upgrade and hence got itself completely screwed up.

Upgrade manager needs looking at. It was able to identify it didn't have all the previous updates completed yet it still offered a partial upgrade. Surely if the system does not have all the requisite updates in place to complete a full upgrade to the later version it should not offer the partial upgrade. Instead it should highlight the missing or failed update package and prevent upgrading until the failed update is corrected.

Will report this as a possible bug. but thanks for your help with this matter
