upgrade 9.04 to 9.10 always propose lucid instead of karmic

Asked by Teleios

Hi,

I made an upgrade successfully from 8.10 to 9.04. Now I am trying to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 but update manager propose 10.4 instead of 9.10.

Specifically, sudo do-release-upgrade fails:

"Checking for a new ubuntu release
Done Upgrade tool signature
Done Upgrade tool
Done downloading
extracting 'lucid.tar.gz'
authenticate 'lucid.tar.gz' against 'lucid.tar.gz.gpg'
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names

Reading cache

Checking package manager

Can not upgrade

An upgrade from 'jaunty' to 'lucid' is not supported with this tool."

How can I fix it?

Regards!

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

Can you post your /etc/apt/sources.list?

I assume you followed this procedure?

I have the same problem as the OP-- after following the EOL Upgrade instructions, I get the same message. It is trying to upgrade to LTS (and, indeed, I want to upgrade to LTS) but it is "not supported with this tool." What other tool can we use?

fwiw, it seems like a bug to me.

Hi mycae,

I followed the official documentation so my /etc/apt/sources.list is:

## EOL upgrade sources.list
# Required
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty-security main restricted universe multiverse

# Optional
#deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty-backports main restricted universe multiverse
#deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty-proposed main restricted universe multiverse

Any idea?

Thanks!

some ideas:
1. Is the jaunty system updated to the most recent patches (open terminal and issue sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade)
2. If do-release-upgrade continues to fail, another possibility is to download the karmic alternate CD and to do the upgrade with it

Thank you Manfred.

Suggestion 1 had already been tested but hte same problem occurs.

Regarding suggestion 2, that's exactly what I want to avoid.

Does update-manager propose a release upgrade?
If yes, to what release?
If karmic, what is the effect of trying that?

What output does

lsb_release -a
uname -a

produce?

I discovered a workaround (thanks to Fabio Marconi):

In the jaunty sources.list file, replace all instances of 'jaunty' with 'karmic' and run update-manager. That pulls in all the karmic updates, and then you reboot into karmic. then run do-release-upgrade to upgrade to lucid.

then struggle with xorg config, but that's a different question :)

Hello !
This worked for me too, I was enable to upgrade from 9.04 to 10.04 LTS but when I've changed in the sources.list file the "jaunty" with "karmic" Ubuntu preopsed to make a partial upgrade then an Upgrade. Thank you for the tip.

Can you help with this problem?
