updated to 11.04 from 10.04 but only got 32 bits i need to run 64 bit. help.

Asked by top jcan

i used the terminal to do an upgrade to 11.04 from 10.04. because update manager was prompting me for this upgrade. but i only got a 32 bit version. i have a Compaq presario with a pentium dual core. originally running vista. i need help going to 64 bit. also my wireless won't turn on after the 11.04 install. one more problem. if i try to open any of the following folders ( from Places. home folder, desktop, documents, music, pictures, video) i only get is remote desktop viewer and a small on top saying"Connection to host /home/jcan was closed." this problem came over from 10.04. thanks for any help.

update-manager is not very reliable.
Download Ubuntu 11.04 for 64 bits processors here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/natty/ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso
burn it, boot it, then install it.
In your case you can't use the "Upgrade" option so you must backup all your datas before install the new version.

"i can't install it", can you be more precise ?
"i burned it", you also can put it on an usb key (with UNetbootin).

i do not know how to install it from the disk. i tryed to boot the computer with the cd in the cd drive and using F10 to get to the sub menu. then selected boot>>cd rom. closed the window to complete the boot. and still no boot from cd. is there another way to do this..................i am just an old windows junky. but i will learn to use ubuntu, even if it end up frying my brain.

UNetbootin is an utility for creating bootable USB key of several operating systems.
You can download and install it here http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Once your key is installed, just boot it.
