if you have it set to default, the update manager will automatically pop up on your screen and then minimise to the task bar at the bottom of the screen.

If you go to System-Administration-Update Manager you can change the settings to what you want.

Hello Paul
thanks for your help.
The unity interface is vertically on left hand side and among others
that is where I have the update manager icon.
It does not show by blinking or flashing that updates are available to
download. I dont know how or where it reveals itself when updates are
available.
I look forward to your help. How do you set updaye manager to default?
I went to update manager settings and couldnt find there which suggested
the above!?
thanks
John

Hi John,

My bad, I just realised I was speaking from the view of using the ubuntu-classic mode..I'll have a look and see if I can find something.

Thanks

Hi again John,

In the unity desktop, if you open up the update manager and then click the 'settings' button, you can set the automatic updates to what time frame you want, and also whether to install them or notify first. If you choose 'Only notify about available updates' then the update manager (usually, it may be different method) icon will appear in the top menu/taskbar when the updates are available.
