update-manager doesn't show gutsy update option

Asked by MoMaT

This is not an actual question, the problem was solved, but I thought I share with it since somebody may face similar issue.

I was running Feisty. When I've run update-manager, the option for upgrading to gutsy was not shown.

I've installed gnuplot package from gutsy before (which depends on glibc) and thought this is the problem. So I force all the gutsy versions of packages back to feisty but I still couldn't upgrade to gutsy. I've also tried "sudo do-release-upgrade" but it said "No new release found".

Then I remembered that I had created /etc/apt/preferences file to have gutsy and feisty packages mixed together:
Package: *
Pin: release a=feisty
Pin-Priority: 700

Package: *
Pin: release a=gutsy
Pin-Priority: 600

After removing the file I was able to successfully apply several missing security fixes and then upgrade to gutsy using update-manager.

I tried to do this, but with no visible results.

This worked for me only because I have introduced manual changes to /etc/apt/preference preventing the dist-upgrade. If you've never been in need of installing packages from different releases you probably don't even have that file in your system. Your problem is somewhere else.

Worked for me too. Had a hell of a problem to install new updates which I knew to be existent in Gutsy.

I am running Feisty. When I've run update-manager, the option for upgrading to gutsy was not shown.

I did run sudo do-release-upgrade, and it failed on http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com feisty-backports Release.gpg
"Getting upgrade prerequisites failed"
the upgrade aborted and restored itself to it's original state.
I have the alternate 7.10 iso in the drive, and it's not interested.
software sources just says stick the new media in the drive. like it would be happy if I did that. well, it's already done and it's passing it by like a cat turning up it's nose at food it doesn't like...

The Feisty Fawn needs a Spanking...

Winterbeast, if I were you I would try to disable backports repository. Go to System->Administration->Software sources, choose "Updates" tab and untick feisty-backports.
