complete system failure after update to 11.04

Asked by huw morgan

Using the Update Manager I updated to 11.04 from 10.10. After several hours, the process appeared to complete successfully. On restarting my PC, the sequence got as far as the page with the Ubuntu word with 5 dots underneath (with a purple background) at which point the system collapsed completely leaving me with a black screen with the monitor reporting 'No Signal'. About the only thing running was the PC power supply. This left me completely isolated.

I've managed to reload 10.10 (off a disk) in a new partition, with the 11.04 in another partition, so I now have web access again. I have a complete copy of my previous Home directory on an expansion drive.

What should I do next in order to retrieve my normal system - on 11.04 if at all possible?

Hi Marco

got as far as using fsck /dev/sda7

reported back clean

sda7 is the partition with the problem linux. There are a number of partitions containing Windows 7, the 10.10 version I managed to load earlier today, a Kubuntu system, and various swap partitions. Quite a mess, but all down to my difficulty getting to grips with linux.

I need to retain all personal data and configs on the failed 11.04 update partition sda7. I have saved 'Home' but I suspect there is a load of stuff elsewhere in the file system (.mozilla, firefox, thunderbird etc) which I do not have saved on a seperate device.

So, in summary, I need to repair and upgrade on sda7 without disturbing anything else in the other partitions.

Also, since I ran fsck as instructed off a CD of 10.10, I am no longer able to boot anything off the hard drive. I just get 'grub error'.

A ) connect your pc to the net prefer the ethernet cable connection

B ) Please boot from live Ubuntu 11.04 cd please made from a torrent downloaded and verified iso if you don't have it

C ) Please follow the steps 1 to 7 of "METHOD 3 - CHROOT" instructions on this page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#METHOD 3 - CHROOT

Then type:
dpkg --configure -a
apt-get -f install
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
shutdown -h now

Remove the cd from drive and reboot...
