uname -a
lsb_release -a

then select all output (edit - select all), copy it (edit - copy) and paste everything into an new message of this question thread.

It seems to me that your package management is ok again. There are no error messages any more shown by the command line version of the package management programs. I expect that also the graphical package management programs are working again.

What you now have to think about is the upgrade to a newer release, because the support with patches for karmic will end in April 2011.

There are two possible paths to stay on a supported release:
1. upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04, from 10.04 to 10.10, and later when they will become available from 10.10 to 11.04, from 11.04 to 11.10 and finally from 11.10 to 12.04 (in fact an upgrade every six months) or
2. upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and stay on 10.04 (this is a 'Long Term Support' release), and when the next LTS release becomes available (planned for April 2012) do the direct upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

The problem you are facing now is a different issue.

What I recommend is to mark this questions as solved, and to start a new one for the new problem.
