Update Manager crashes everytime

Asked by Thomas George

Every time update manager starts up, it crashes immediately with this:

Could not attach to process. If your uid matches the uid of the target
process, check the setting of /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope, or try
again as the root user. For more details, see /etc/sysctl.d/10-ptrace.conf
ptrace: Operation not permitted.
/home/thomas/4093: No such file or directory.
No stack.

I have the similar problem with "Synaptic Package Manager" and "Ubuntu Software Center"

I did not realize that Ubuntu 11.04 is an alpha release. Update manager brought it up, and I upgraded, so this bug might be expected (even though I did not find it on the list of known bugs). I am not a power user, and would be happy to downgrade, but that does not seem to be possible. I can give more details about my system if that helps.

If you open a terminal (accessoires/terminal) and type in
sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

or

sudo dpkg -reconfigure -phigh -a

What output do you get?

Normally every alpha release crashes early in its development cycle during an update. But it does do this only once and normally find a fix so I am most constantly using alpha releases myself. Seems like I didn't get the said update until now. But... let's see. Sooner or later this update will arrive in europe, too.

Wow! That worked! I didn't even try dpkg yet. Does that do the same thing?

It seems to have fixed Update Manager, Synaptic and Software Center.

Thank you so much, Peter. I'm a huge fan of Ubuntu, and have been using it for 3 years, without having to ask for help.

You are welcome ;-)

The dpkg line can help you if dpkg or aptitude has been able to unpack all packages - and then was interrupted somehow before it has been able to configure then. But normally manually upgrading your system from the console will fix any problem.
