Unable to upgrade with apt in Ubuntu 10.10

Asked by Rajinder Sandhu

Sir,
O am using ubuntu 10.10 a couple of months back i found old linux images so i removed them only two are left which is not getting removed...and apt can not upgrade until unless it has removed these files.
I am unable to upgrade my packages as there are a few linux-images which are not getting removed securely by system. So if we can skip these linux images from removal, can we do the upgradation as usual or I need to reinstall the OS.
Do we have any option or work around to skip these removals as even in synaptic package manager I am unable to untick them from removal.
Thanks
Rajinder

Your question is unclear. Are you saying that you removed some linux images but the package manager thinks they're still there, or that some linux images that you didn't remove are actually there and you are unable to remove them?

In fact removed old images and their headers but two are not getting removed the following are not get removed
linux-headers-2.6.31-16
linux-headers-2.6.31-20
Please refer my previous Question #140716 in which i presented even terminal output ...i am pasting again....

the following packages will be REMOVED:
 linux-headers-2.6.31-16 linux-headers-2.6.31-20
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 2 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
2 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 147MB disk space will be freed.

Is this question a duplicate of https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+question/140716, then?

If not, please explain how your situation is different.

If so, you should close this question, and reopen that one, since the information there is considerably more comprehensive (and because that's the earlier question).

You can change that question's status back from Answered to Open by posting again in it and clicking the button indicating that you still need assistance. Its status remained Answered because you clicked the "Just Add a Comment" button instead. When you gave the output of actionparsnip's command.

it is related to that but it is different in a way that now I want to stop those two files from removing process, let the system hold that removing of headers and continue doing upgrade process. And there is no response from a long time for the question being referred.
