can you upgrade with a normal cd(not alternate) from 10.04 to 10.10 ?

Asked by rouge6

Ok.. i'm sorry to be a constant bother but I really am starting to love the ubuntu suite... infact i've actually formatted my harddrive and did away with WinXp.. I no longer use windows.

My question is simple.. I installed ubuntu 10.04 offline with an ACTUAL Canonical burnt CD... I have another canonical burnt CD of 10.10 (NOT ALTERNATE VERSION) .. and I wasn't aware of the alternate version for upgrades...

Can I use the CD I have to simply upgrade or must I format if I want to use my cd.?

Anyone wanna try?? Please thank you?

I realize this is probably the same difference of buying a car.... and then wondering if I can slam a completely different engine into it... but with enough modding.. I believe anything is possible.

with googled research I believe you guys refer to my cd as the "Wubi" cd.. In which case it does have wubi.exe on it and a usb creator.

To upgrade, you don't need the CD; just a working internet connnection with sufficient bandwidth to download the updated packages

Its possible, but not well tested, and may bork something.

You can add the CD as a repository to your source either by modifying /etc/apt/sources.list, or by adding it as a "third party" CD source:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu#CD-ROM/DVD

and then perform:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude safe-upgrade

This should bring you closish to a current 10.10 desktop. You can then use the net to update any remaining packages.

If you didn't configure 10.04 not very much yet, backup important data and install 10.10.
New releases will go through major changes since there're is lots of work in the pipeline, e.g. kernel, graphic drivers, desktop environment.

Actually as long as you don't format anything only system files will be updated. If /home is on a separate partition which is basically recommended it won't be touched as long as it isn't formatted. Partition manager of LiveCD offers to manually partition and to keep /home as is.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DiskSpace

Non default applications need to be reinstalled after upgrade.

It's also recommended to pay attention to release notes before upgrading.

If the system is a laptop, borrow a buddys connection and upgrade. You cannot upgrade using the desktop CD normally

HOWEVER

(I don't condone this but I know it can be done. Its effectiveness or stability is somewhat questionable. I suggest you upgrade in the normal way but I will tell you what I know)

If you boot to the desktop CD and select custom partitioning. Select the partitions for the SAME function but set them to NOT be formatted. This will install Maverick ON TOP of Lucid and may be a method to upgrade

Once again. I think this is a REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY bad idea.

No matter how you upgrade to another version sooner or later you'll need to update via internet to get at least latest drivers. Installation procedure advises to have internet connection to retrieve latest updates.

During manually partitioning you can keep /home as is, but you should format / allowing to install new system files on it.

> hates intel

Not really, bug numbers aren't extremely high.
