No, its a textscreen, it welcomes me to ubuntu and I have to login but it ends with: ake@ake-desktop:~$_
also:
0 packages can be updated
0 updates are security updates

ok if you boot back to root recovery mode and run:

echo "blacklist nvidia" > /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf

Then reboot, you should then use the open driver and it should work. You should then uninstall the proprietary driver then reinstall it, then run:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf

And reboot. The proprietary nvidia driver rarely survives distribution changes so these steps are needed.

I followed your instruction:
ok if you boot back to root recovery mode and run:echo "blacklist nvidia" > /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf
but after reboot the screen with ubuntu logo with five red dots is hanging.

Try adding nomodeset as a startup option: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132

Sorry, it didn't work. I have instead changed graphic-card, cpu, dvd-reader and made a new ubuntu 10.10 installation from dvd. Now the computer works better then ever.
Thanks for all help.
