installer for Microsoft (?) TrueType core fonts

Asked by vfmla

Hi,

I have a shorter experience with Linux, so I met this update for the first time. in Update Manager among the packages to be installed was Microsoft True Type core fonts, and I was asked to agree with a EULA of Microsoft.

in the middle of everything Linux, an EULA of Microsoft?

I presume it is just a necessity of font compatibility or a similar point, is it?

many thanks and best greets,

Hi vfmla,

Its because the fonts are from Microsoft, that's why it requests for the EULA.

Ubuntu doesn't stole those fonts. You have to agree its license if you want to use those fonts. It's up to you if you use them or not.

Not here in linux is just GPL, there are many packages that have different licenses. Go through the metapackage "ubuntu-restricted-extras" and you'll see a bunch of weird non-open licenses.

thank you Hilario, for your quick assistance with my question.

It seems that I cannot uncheck MS-fonts installer from update manager.

I see the point you inform me about. so it is just licensing the use of fonts and nothing else, right?

do you know if it affects creating of documents a great deal not to install them?

many thanks again!

I managed to uncheck ttf-mscore font installer, but then I received error message "unhandleable error occured.."

there is a launchpad bug-report commentary for this error that says the problem is solved when installing the ttf-mscore fonts from synaptic.

so it seems inevitable to use them?

sorry Eliah for the late response, just now saw the mail notification of your post!

a user's post referred to update manager being interrupted with a message starting with "an unhandleable error occured.." I do not have the details of this post with me, but it was the same message that appeared while update manager ran and that stopped it.

my problem was that I couldnt uncheck ttf-mscore from installation, but then I could do so by unchecking everything and one by one checking those I wished to have installed.
