9.10 to 10.04 to 10.10 gui issue

greeting
i have just updated from 9.10 to 10.04 to 10.10
after all the restarts 10.10 comes up with a login prompt
hmm this is not right i logged in and have a comand prompt
hp@hp-desktop: ~$
how do i make it load up the gui interface ?
10.04 loaded the gui interface ?

Could you login and run command:
   startx
and report results.

less /var/log/Xorg.0.log

startx
no screen found
xinit no such file or directory (errno 2) unable to connect to x server
xinitr no such process errno 3 server error

i have found grub is 1.98 xxxx
after searching i need to reinstall grub 2
i am bout to go find that or if someone has a quick link that would be great

found a video on line how to reinstall 10.10 without lossing anything
i have don this an all is working fine thanks for the help
