Steps to consider before upgrading to 10.10

Asked by Arindam

I am currently running Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10 in my laptop. I want to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10. Last time I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.x (forgot exact version) to 9.10, Ubuntu got corrupt and needed installation to fix. So this time before starting upgrade I want to be cautious.
1. Is there any known issues with upgrade from 9.10 to 10.10
2. Any precautions I can take to make sure if any thing goes wrong I can get back to older version
3. Most importantly, I have dual boot option enabled now. Will this option remain as it is after upgrade

Thanks in Advance!

There is no upgrade path from 9.10 to 10.10 so you will have to upgrade to 10.04 and then to 10.10. There are generally less surprises when re-installing from scratch. If you decide to go through the double upgrade path there is a pretty good chance that you will have no issues but this is not a guaranty. Back up everything to be on the safe side.
