The error is here:

?: keyserver.ubuntu.com: Connection timed out

Apparently you do not have access to the ubuntu keyserver (keyserver.ubuntu.com). It is possible that a network admin in your organization or your ISP if you are from home has blocked your access.

ok thanks for that! it i dont know quite what has happened but the "no entry" sign has gone and i have been about to update now but only when important updates are ticked . but recommended ticked it fails to up due to "Requires installation of untrusted packages The action would require the installation of packages from unauthenticated sources. details libpst4"

would you be able to point me in the right direction to sort this one out please!! ?

I apologize I did not mean to be a source for answers about Ubuntu ...It is
actually I that needs help for I am brand new to this system and have very
little skill sets when it comes to knowing my way around....I do apologize,
I can assure you though that the level of knowledge and help that I have
received amongst the Open Source / Launch Pad and Overall Ubuntu help
experience has been more than adequate, in fact down right helpful...so I AM
SURE SOMEONE WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS PROPERLY AND BEST OF LUCK!

Respectfully,

Same error. Looks like a connectivity issue:

Can you try ping and mtr the keyserver.ubuntu.com server? In Terminal:

  ping keyserver.ubuntu.com
  mtr keyserver.ubuntu.com

Paste the output here.

OK it seems that the server is up. Now let's see if the web service is up:

  telnet keyserver.ubuntu.com 80

If the port 80 (web) is up you will get:

Trying 91.189.89.49...
Connected to keyserver.ubuntu.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

Enter the "GET" command and you will get the html code of the frontpage of the server.

If it does not work this will explain the problem. Someone has blocked port 80 (the web service) for keyserver.ubuntu.com If it does work then it is a strange error indeed and probably you should consider filing a bug about this.

You guys did a wonderful job of working thru this problem. I followed all the steps listed and came up with the same answers. I can not apt-get any updates. I can ping the keyserver and my port 80 is open. I am going to call my ISP provider tomorrow (Comcast) and see if there has been anything done on their end. Can you tell me if a bug has been filed and do you need my additional info for said bug?

Can you help with this problem?
