How To Decline an Update?

Asked by klausner

Recently, 10.04's Update Manager has listed several packages that I did NOT really want to install. For example, last week it had a Japanese font package that was of no use/interest to me.

If I just uncheck them in the menu, they remain there and nag at me forever. Is there a way to de-list such packages within the Update Manager without letting it install them and then deleting the package afterwards?

You can lock them using Synaptic. Search on package name, and click to select the package. Then click on Package menu, and Lock version.

Doesn't a package have to be installed in order to be locked? The Japanese font package wasn't.

You can lock the version of packages that aren't installed. I'm not sure why you'd be prompted to update packages that aren't installed. Maybe someone else will be able to enlighten you.

Go to Synaptic and uninstall the packages that you don't want. Check what other packages are uninstalled simultaneously with them. One they are uninstalled, updates are not going to bother you.

By default you may have packages that you don't need, it is normal. Ubuntu installs software to allow text input in Japanese, in case you need it.

I definitely did not have the Japanese ttf package in question installed. I checked.
