unable to update the package information

i am receiving same error while updating the package information.
the error is as followed

"Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net///ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found
, W:Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net///ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found

how should i fix this?

Can you give the output of:

gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Your sources are wrong.

copy the file /etc/apt/sources.list to a backup location (such as in your home folder), then replace it with the following:

thanks for the suggestion. but all the other repos are "http://in." only. the repositories u suggested seem to be like "http://us" since i am in india is it safe to alterlist with those us version repos? i am quite new to linux and ubuntu maverick is the first distro im usin so wanted to confirm b'fore doin it.

Yes, there is a "http://in." mirror as well -- if you can navigate to it from a web browser, it should be fine.

Your sources is already broken -- as long as you keep a backup, you can't make it much worse than it is :)

Sorry, but thats not quite what actionparsnip was after -- when you enter in "gedit /etc/apt/sources.list" this should open the text editing program gedit, which will display the contents of the file /etc/apt/sources.list . We are looking for the contents of that file -- if this is fixed correctly, then this will correct your problem.

Can you please post the contents of that file? it should look similar to what I posted.

yeah i got the meaning of output wrong. actually as you suggested i had a back-up of original sources.list file but somehow i messed up with the backup as well so both of the sources.list files now have the same content as per your suggestion.
i.e.

but i can see the repositories which i had before updating the 'sources.list' in 'synaptic package manager--> settings-->repository'

is there any way to reflect the repositories or generate a new 'sources.list' from there('synaptic package manager')? or i should mention sources with their url separately for each of them?

ok, it looks like you must have the sources.list.d folder, with alternate sources in there. Try moving it out of the way -- you can use this command:
sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ /etc/apt/sources.list.d.ORIG/

or just run nautilus in admin mode and rename it.

yup mycae now the package info has got updated. thanks for the help. there are two things i am not able to figure out.
First , how to find out what was wrong there with the existing sources? secondly in repositories i am not able to see the other sources i added for apps such as opera, docky, bisigi, deluge and so on.... how to add them back in sources.list? coz in the folder sources.list.d and now sources.list.d.orig every source is separated.
is there any syntax to follow while manually adding them into sources.list or i can simply copy and paste them in the current source.list file one by one?

The problem occurred due to a problem with the syntax when you added a source, so re-adding them one by one should help you (or better, use a bisection method, add half of them, and if it doesn't work, you know which half is the bad half, assuming there is only one bad half.) .

The syntax is

deb URL section1 optionalsection2 optionalsection3 ...

for normal packages

and
deb-src URL section1 optionalsection2 optionalsection3 ...

for source packages.

You can use the '#" symbol to comment out parts of the text ie, anything on a line after # is ignored.

You will have to find the URLs by hand -- http://ppa.launchpad.net///ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz for example is not valid (try just running it in your web browser)
