Upgrading to 10.10

Asked by Robert Hunt

I have been trying to upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to the new version. On the Ubuntu homepage, it suggests going through all earlier upgrades, but there is no version to get from 8.04 to 8.10.
I've also tried to run the "test" version of 10.10 and even though I copied the installation files, stating that i was using Ubuntu, when I insert the boot disk I made, I get an error message saying it's not a debian disc.

LTS (Long Term Support) versions follow upgrade path LTS -> LTS. Non LTS versions can upgrade just one version at the time, like 10.04 -> 10.10.

8.10 is not supported anymore, so it is possible that its repositories are not available anymore, thus you can't update to such version. 8.04 IS LTS and so is 10.04. You should be able to upgrade 8.04 -> 10.04. Then if you wish 10.04 -> 10.10.

I think Ubuntu should suggest this 8.04 -> 10.04 upgrade if you'll check the package manager. This is true for at least the Kubuntu variant.

If you are just running an desktop system for your own amusement, I suggest you backup all your data and install a clean 10.10. Much faster (and safer).

Can you help with this problem?
