hello,
i just tried to update my ubuntu 10.10 .
it said :Failed to download repository information ,this and
below.
check your connecetion.
but i was present on my connection.

and when i clicked details it showed

A) - Be sure you are connected to the net to verify it click on the link below:

http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick-security/Release.gpg

then if you don't get browser error go to step B otherwise verify your network connection and retry

B) open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgradel

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Anupam, by your name I guess you may be in South-East Asia. Several governments there deploy proxies to censor the internet (or require ISPs to deploy them). These proxies often break people's software. It's why the twitter client won't work for millions of people in the region, for instance. I've heard of the proxies in Laos causing problems with Ubuntu updates.

If this is the problem, it may be possible to solve it by telling apt not to use any caching on the proxy. But it takes some figuring out how to do that; I'm sure the Ubuntu folks can help you with that *if* this is indeed the cause of the problem. Better try the other steps first though!
