Upgrading release from 8.04 i get an install failed and left system unusable

While installing ubuntu 10.* (not sure if it was 10.04 or 10.10) in an upgrade from 8.04 an error occured (failed hwtest) after pretty much everything had been removed from the desktop. Rebooting the system gets me to a cursor which does nothing.
ANY advise on how to fix this?

It should be 10.04 as you can upgrade LTS to LTS, or to the next release.
