Upgrade release from 10.04 to 10.10 using an the install cd or iso image...

Asked by Mannex

Since my internet connection is about as fast as a paper-tape drive, I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade my 10.04 by using the install CD. That way, I can spend the roughly four days it is estimating to download it, burn the disc, then do a nice, timely upgrade. Or do I have to actually use the update manager? Thanks.

You can upgrade using the ubuntu-10.10-alternate-i386.iso

Please use torrent on your connection to download it

http://releases.ubuntu.com/maverick/ubuntu-10.10-alternate-i386.iso.torrent

Then you must mount the iso in loop mode and use it to upgrade

Interesting solution. After the upgrade, my machine booted to a command-line version of 10.10. Very ugly. When I tried to remedy it, it stopped booting altogether. I did a full install from the image I downloaded (thankfully I DID save it to a CD), and used my backups to put all my personal stuff back on. Had to reinstall all the software, though. Quite ugly. Not a pleasant experience. I would suggest if anyone else reads this, they consider NOT following these instructions exactly. It's possible this was a unique experience, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I think the "alternate" install disc was the problem. I probably should have grabbed the desktop version and let it upgrade me. Anyway, it still beats the hell out of using Windows and PAYING to have your system screwed up, right? :)

Can you help with this problem?
