Upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 -- "could not calculate the upgrade"

Asked by Cyrus Omar

I am trying to get an ubuntu 8.10 system I only have remote access to upgraded from 8.10 to 10.04. I used do-release-upgrade (no command line arguments) to get it to 9.04, and invoked it again. However, this time I'm getting the following error:

Support for some applications ended

Canonical Ltd. no longer provides support for the following software
packages. You can still get support from the community.

If you have not enabled community maintained software (universe),
these packages will be suggested for removal at the end of the
upgrade.

Calculating the changes

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be
caused by held packages.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the
'update-manager' package and include the files in
/var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

Any ideas on why this is happening?

Did you check if you have a held package ? This error message seems the reason for your problem.

I could be able to help you on a fresh install. Not on such issue. If you are interested, post again.

I'm not sure what "held package" means, but here is the output of apt-get update/upgrade/dist-upgrade:

So it doesn't look like there are any "held" packages.

I'm not really sure what "held" means either, but I think it could be a software whose version is locked: it cannot be upgraded. So, if the new version requires a newer version of this software, it will fail.

To check if you have packages like that, open Synaptic, then check the buttons on the left, there should be one called "Status", or something similar. Then in the list of filter values, the last one I have here is "Tagged", and it shows me the list of packages that I marked as "locked". Check if you have something with this filter plz.

Have a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu.
It seems you have to enable "Universe" depot.
After activating this depot in Synaptic (System->Administration->Packet Management), try again to update.

Can you help with this problem?
