Do Ubuntu releases get updated with the latest packages as bugs are discovered?

Asked by paul

Do Ubuntu releases get updated with the latest packages as bugs are discovered?

Should I download Maverick Meerkat on the day it is released or should I wait a few weeks until all the bugs have been ironed out and then download it?

When I downloaded and installed Lucid my PC immediately wanted to download 300MB of updates. We have very limited bandwidth and I would like to use it as best as possible.

I hope I have made myself clear.
Thanks
Paul

Security problems are fixed all the time, so you get updates all the time.
For bugs, I'm not sure it's the case. but you can activate some repositories (proposed & backports) to get fresher versions of softwares.

Maverick is already quite stable, I think you can update on the day it's released. However, if you are using Ubuntu in a professionnal environnement, maybe you can consider waiting a bit indeed. And you are right, it should have updates quickly to fix some problems, so you may save some bandwith by waiting a bit. But the update frequency won't be that unusual. It's really important right now as people are testing the RC. The most important is to do the updates regularily, otherwise you will get hundreds of MB to download after a few months.

Thanks for the reply but I am still unsure.

Is there a difference between the iso image I download on the day it is
released and the iso image I download in, say, 3 months time? Does the
newer one have the security fixes and patches incorporated?

Thank you
Paul

No, CD are not updated, except for long time service releases, like Lucid. For Maverick, I think there should be only one CD.
