update manager will not update

Asked by pappyscrapster

Evening,, I've been trying to resolve a update manager issue,, fairly new to Ubuntu, maybe a year, I'm running 10.4 and of late, Id say the last 5 weeks when I go to use update manager I get a list of needed or proposed updates, so far so good, but when I try and actually download or "do the updating, it simply goes back to the update screen and shows me the same updates, nothing really updates. so I have been reading and using terminal to stay current however would really like a solution or a direction. to date I've changed (back and forth) my software source, main to, server for the US, then back again,, not sure how to actually check all the current repositories. I've also read and used this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure. not sure if it resolved the issue,, Thank you fellas..

Shall I try uploading the requested information again? Should I use which tab,? "I'm providing more information",, or "just add a comment"?

Hi!
sudo apt-get update simply syncs your computer to the repositories with all the updated packages

In order for you to download and install the packages, you need to run sudo apt-get upgrade.

Yes thank you I understand that procedure, what I don't understand is why my update manager is not working like it used to?
Thanks gents.

Please give us something more about what you mean... when you say "... like it used to"

New to Ubuntu: read the Ubuntu Manual, it's very informative: http://ubuntu-manual.org/

Well for the entire time I've used this version (9 months or more) I've simply started the system's "up date manager program" look at what I had to update or down load, check or un-check what I wanted or needed and clicked update, gave my password, and watched as it all started. Now all it does is shows me what I need, and I click update, and it simply reloads the current window, nothing actually updates or downloads, and it seems redundant, just keep doing that procedure.
All this was from the system's update manager, ie >System>Admin>Update Manager, worked great all this time, never had to use a terminal.
So my problem is not knowing what happened to my update manager program & why it won't really update?
Thank you
Cheers

Hi and thanks, I've read all the manual I felt addressed my problem, I found nothing pertaining to my non working "update manager" Synaptic, is working, as is the systems's software center, also the terminal is working, why is my system's "update manager" failing to download what it says I need?
Thanks

Please provide a screenshot of your update-manager, you can't send any attached image here please use web service like photobucket.com or imageshack.us to load your screenshot and then post the link here

Thank you for the suggestion, but a screen shot will not show the anything relevant or revealing, the problem occurs only at the instant I hit "update" and then it lasts for 5 seconds, any other suggestions?
Thank you.

This you can try. Go to System > Administration and select Software Sources. From the window, select a Server (Download from:) other than what you are using. Then run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade again and see if the updates are installed.

HI and thanks for the additional help, I'm not sure what I did to fix this issue, but what ever it was it worked. I do think it was something along the lines of this most recent suggestion, in the future I am going to pay more attention to that "source" issue.
Thanks to all who played along. I do consider this closed.

Hi, HSN, and thank you,, I was un-aware I could unload or re-install that feature, no one had brought it up, and clearly it had not occurred to me, but that very well could have made a difference. Ill try it if my problem returns.
Thank you
