i can not install updates from internet

when ever i am trying to install a new software or install updates the system is showing me the following error
"Failed to lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock". what am i supposed to do?

Make sure that you are not running more than one instance of package manager application (Synaptic Package Manager and Add/Remove .. or in terminal "sudo apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade"). If not, try "sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/lock", after you kill the update application ("ps aux" to list all running processes and look for "apt-get" or update-manager" and use the command "sudo killall apt-get" or "sudo killall update-manager", to remove that file and try again to run package manager application.

Yes you can try the command to kill the running processes related to the active package manager

but sometimes the quick way is to simply reboot your pc and then retry to update from menu...

System→Administration→Update Manager
