Installing newer version of Ubuntu

Asked by Dick Metzger

I am currently running Ubuntu 8.4 and would like to upgrade to the newer version 10.04 - I have the program on CD and wondered if I must first uninstall 8.4 or can I just insert the CD containing the 10.04 program and have it install automatically over the older version?
If I should be advised to uninstall the older version I would need instructions on how to do this. Many Thanks: Richard

apt-get install update-manager-core; do-release-upgrade

You may need to run:

gksudo gedit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

and change:
Prompt=normal
to
Prompt=lts

but I doubt it will need changing as you are using the previous LTS.

Theres also a gui way but I find advising via text easier as this is a text based forum. Here is a guide with some prett pictures:

Please use the command as actionparsnip suggest, is the usual way to upgrade the system (usually it will take hours).

But i strongly suggest first to save your relevant data and to take note of your accounts mail settings then also made a Ubuntu 10.04 install cd.

Then create by yourself ( *** note ) an install cd of Ubuntu 10.04 so if something goes wrong you will be able to install a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.04 please simply select use entire disk if you reinstall the system from the 10.04 cd.

** note:

1) please download the 700 mb file http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download simply press on download button
To avoid download errors please prefer to download the desired ubuntu iso install cd image using the torrent protocol
Here the link http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

2) check the md5sum of downloaded file to be sure it have no error https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Only if the md5sum number match with this: http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/MD5SUMS consider the iso image good and ready to be burned

3) burn the iso file onto a cd: use brasero or k3b burn at lower speed you can do and activate the data verify

4) to be really sure also the cd can be read from your cd/dvd device without errors and the new Ubuntu 10.04 will run on your pc, insert the self made install cd into your pc cdrom drive and:

boot from the Ubuntu 10.04 cd and when the system start to boot from cd you will see two bottom screen icons (keyboard and man inside circle ) please press space (choose your desired language) then a screen textual center menu will appear to you with this items in it:

Try Ubuntu without installing
Install Ubuntu
Check disc for defects
Test memory
Boot from first hard disk

Please select "Check disc for defects" and press enter to test if your cd-driver can read in a good way the live install cd... or if the install cd have some defective file in it.

You can also try Ubuntu Without installing to be sure almost works.

Ask new question if you have trouble installing or if you have any doubt.

Hope this helps
