Could not download all repository indexes

Hello people,

I am beginner to Linux. This is the first time I am updating my system from 9.10 to 10.04.
I am getting an error:

Could not download all repository indexes:

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Are you connected to the internet and can web browse on the same PC. Updates require an internet connection and this sort of activity shows no link. If you use a router then you may be connected to that but the connection beyond may be severed so rebooting the router may help (and modem if you have one of those too).

Hello,
I am glad to see an answer.
But I was CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET....
As I have said My connection uses a proxy,But i HAVE TRIED with making proxy all right also....

Please tell us what kind of proxy have in your lan env... is an ntlm auth based proxy...?

The,

HTTP PROXY : proxy.iitm.ac.in port:3128
SECURE HTTP PROXY: proxy.iitm.ac.in port:3128
FTP PROXY : proxy.iitm.ac.in port:3128
Socks proxy : proxy.iitm.ac.in port:3128

There is also a authentication used:Username : iitm\****
                                                        password : *******

NO when I type this /etc/apt/apt.conf in my terminal it says permission denied

"... Edit your /etc/apt/apt.conf file as root ... "

mean you must type a prefix: the "sudo" or "gksudo" prefix

- sudo or gksudo is an instruction to run a program as root user, the system will ask you your user password to access to it

- the root user is the powerful user on *nix system

So from Application→Acc.→Terminal please type:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/apt.conf
