You need to edit your sources.list, inthe terminal copy and paste this:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Then at the top of the file comment out (#) the cdrom://Ubuntu 10.04 LTS _Lucid Lynx

After further testing, I removed this message

Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/user/ppa-name/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

All now working okay, and it appears that I can now download okay

I do not have that line

# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 10.10 _Maverick Meerkat_ - Release amd64 (20101007)]/ maverick main restricted
# See http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes for how to upgrade to
# newer versions of the distribution.

And I have the same issue
