cannot download 10.04 upgrade

when I try to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 via update manager, I get the following message:

 W:Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid/Release Unable to find expected entry main'./binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
, E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

they only thing i can think of would be to change your "server". i am using 10.04 UNE, but i think 9.10 is the same:
open "update manager"->settings->ubuntu software (tab)-> change the "download server" to something else
