Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

Thanks for your response - I really don't know much about computers. Thanks for guiding me to the correct place.

Can you open a terminal and give the output of:

sudo dpkg --configure -a; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

Thanks

It's getting more confusing...

elaine@freegeek:~$
elaine@freegeek:~$ file
Usage: file [-bcikLhnNrsvz0] [-e test] [-f namefile] [-F separator] [-m magicfiles] file...
       file -C -m magicfiles
Try `file --help' for more information.
elaine@freegeek:~$ /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.osuosl.org_pub_pculture.org_miro_linux_repositories_ubuntu_hardy_Packages
bash: /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.osuosl.org_pub_pculture.org_miro_linux_repositories_ubuntu_hardy_Packages: Permission denied

Thanks

No, the command is ALL one:

file /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.osuosl.org_pub_pculture.org_miro_linux_repositories_ubuntu_hardy_Packages

Is the command, copy the whole command line

elaine (ekanigan1) said : #9

Like this?

elaine@freegeek:~$ file /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.osuosl.org_pub_pculture.org_miro_linux_repositories_ubuntu_hardy_Packages
/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.osuosl.org_pub_pculture.org_miro_linux_repositories_ubuntu_hardy_Packages: ASCII text, with very long lines

Perfect:

can you give the output of:

gedit /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.osuosl.org_pub_pculture.org_miro_linux_repositories_ubuntu_hardy_Packages

Thanks (same deal as before with the copying)

elaine (ekanigan1) said : #11

The answer is a huge file with about 12 packages. Do you want that?

Yes please
