Can't get upgrade prompt

Asked by Candy

In order to upgrade from 8,04 to 8.10 I installed all 8.04 upgrades. It said I needed to restart to finish process, so I did. Now the prompt to show Upgrade to 8.10 is available is no longer showing, and my Upgrade Manager does not bring it back - shows all is up to date. Also, my software sources no longer show Ubuntu as a tab.

Click Upgrade.
# Follow the on-screen instructions.
i no longer have the message that there is a new release available.

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
you should post your sources.list here.

I always do it this way:

sudo apt-get install update-manager-core; gksudo gedit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

Change:

Prompt=lts

to

Prompt=normal

Save the new file and close gedit. Then run:

sudo do-release-upgrade

I think you are going to solve my problem action parsnip, but I need a little more info. I am pretty computer literate, but new to Ubuntu. Where are you getting to sudo-apt-get install update-manager-core? Typing on the konsole? If so, are these exact inputs? Or is sudo apt an application?
thank you very much

Leoquant - where do I get "sources.list."? I am pretty literate as far as computers go, but new to Ubuntu. Thank you to everyone for helping me, I really appreciate it.

its a terminal command. You can copy and paste the commands to the terminal to save any user error.

This part runs fine -
sudo apt-get install update-manager-core; gksudo gedit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

When I put in Change:
I get back bash Change:: command not found

Change isn't a command

I'm telling you to change the file. Try reading the text rather than just copying random text.

Thank you for your patience, this is taking me a while to learn, haven't worked in anything but Windows for a few decades.
I have found out how to open the file etc/Update Manager/release upgrades. The Prompt is already set to Normal. But when i run sudo do-release-upgrade, it keeps telling me there is no new release. I am only in 8,04LTS so I know there are new releases. Any further ideas?

I suggest you download the Intrepid ALTERNATIVE ISO then run:

sudo mount -o loop ~/Desktop/ubuntu-8.10-alternate-i386.iso /media/cdrom0; gksu "sh /media/cdrom0/cdromupgrade"

Assuming you downloaded the iso to the desktop and you use 32bit Ubuntu

Can you help with this problem?
