Unless it is the alternate CD, you cannot use the CD to upgrade. You can only upgrade using the alternate CD

You mount the CD then you can run:

gksu "sh /media/cdrom0/cdromupgrade"

If you have the desktop CD you cannot do this. You can download the alternative ISO, mount the ISO using:

sudo mount -o loop /path/to/file.iso /media/cdrom0

Then you can run the above command, but then you may as well do an internet upgrade as it will download less data. If the system you are upgrading has no web access you will need to mount the CD (it will automount to /media/cdrom0) then run the gksu command above.

You need to download the Ubuntu alternate iso image...

In this page http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

please read this section:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading#Upgrading%20Using%20the%20Alternate%20CD/DVD

Download the ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso iso image from here: http://torrent.ubuntu.com:6969/

Hope this helps
