What version of Ubuntu are you running? In Ubuntu 11.10, the Software Center says you have a choice of archivers: RAR, Xarchiver, 7zip, and Ark.

sudo apt-get -y install rar unrar p7zip-rar p7zip-full unp

You can now either use:

unp filename

to extract 'filename' or you can use nautilus

Can you help with this problem?
