permissions problem?

Asked by atomics

hello Ubuntu community!

I am being thwarted trying to unrar my new episode of LOST. arrgh!

I have 2 machines with fresh version of ubuntu 9.04 installed, one for my neighbor (larry) and one for me (homer)

On both machines I canot unrar a multi-part rar download of my precious

I used to run 8.04 on larry's system, that may or may not be important (afaik) Did I mention I am noob? Anyway, while running 8.04 on larry for a few months I had downloaded about 200 Gb worth of vids and whatnot. I never had a problem un-rar-ing and watching those on the plasma. multi-part rars, un-rar'd through teh gui default program, no problemo.

I moved that 200GB of data to a new ubuntu 9.04 system I had recently built for myself (homer). I wanted to upgrade to 9.04 on both systems for the advantages of installing linux on its own partition and 9.04 goodness.

Cut to the chase, I downloaded a 25-part rar on homer machine. When I try to un-rar it using the gui the way I used to do it (File Roller 2.26.1 is default program when I double-click on the rar part01) it creates a 4096 byte directory instead of a 350MB .avi file.

None of the files I have moved to the new /data/ partition I created on homer unrar properly. This happens on all of the multi-part rar files I had previously downloaded, so I don't think my 25 part rar of LOST ep.15 is corrupt. It is a problem on all of the files I transferred to homer, and also newly downloaded files like my LOST rar. I'm guessing, but it seems to be a permissions or even a group/user thing for all the multi-part rar files on homer.

I copied the files to a usb thumb drive on homer and could not properly unrar it there. I used the thumb drive to move the files to larry and could not unrar there either.

I had a linux buddy helping me out when I re-installed on the homer system. He turned me onto the separate partition for the filesystem. He created an admin group and made homer a part of it, giving my homer permssion to write to the /data partition. That's what I recall. He did some chmod stuff to make it so, etc. I don't remember everything he did. I didn't notice this unrar problem when he was here. I've re-booted since then.

I've tried changing permissions using chmod for the various directories I've copied these files to. Which tells me I have write permission to the directory, so my question is, "why doesn't unrar work through the gui or the command line?'

I'm not sure where to go from here. I've copied these files from one system to another using a usb thumb drive. I have write permissions from what I can tell. I've installed unrar-free using synaptic package manager. I've used chmod ogu+rw to give drwxrwxrwx permission to the directory with the mulit-part rar

but it only creates a file (directory) with 4096 bytes, it does not take the normal amount of time (10 sec or so) to crank out the final .avi file like I expect. The directory it creates contains no other files. My precious LOSTS05E15 is nowhere to be found.

I can check the contents of the rar and it looks ok.

I've tried unrar n the homer system, on the usb thumb drive, on the larry system. All give me the same problem.

Sorry about my rambling. Am sincerely trying to supply the necessary info, but I am LOST. lol :-)

Thanks in advance, obi-wan kenobi. You're my only hope.

If I leave the destination unspecified when using unrar on the command line I assume it will unrar to the current directory, correct?

I tried the unrar command with sudo prefix and same problem -- creates small .avi directory instead of 350MB .avi file

Why do you use the Terminal there is a special software for that, open add/remove and search for RAR , check the Xarchiver software and install it , after , go to your video files , right click on the first part, choose Xarchiver , if you don't find it click on Open with other application and choose it (you can type X for easy search). click ok , then after opening the file (all the other files are automatically read because there is many parts as you said ). By a right click Choose Extract to ... and wait !! report me anything whether there is an error.

I installed Xarchiver and ran it on the file. Same problem -- it creates a small 4096 byte folder called

lost.0515.hdtv.xvid-notv.avi

with nothing inside of it.

I installed Xarchiver using Synaptic Package Manager and ran Applications > Accessories > Xarchiver

Archive > Open (i then selected rar file with "part01" in the name)

Action > Extract (with options checked for for Files:Selected Files and Options:Overwrite Existing Files)

After that it creates the directory without any other files.

xarchiver does not report an error, but it does not produce the expected .avi file.

Just like when I run unrar from he command line, it says everything ok, but only a directory is created.

OK , go to the folder where are your files , press Ctrl+H , in order to show hidden files , if there is no hidden files , then right click on the folder and then go to Properties->Permissions:

Configure the folder this way:

Owner: "<Your user name>"
=>Folder access: "Create and delete folders"
=>File access:"Read and Write" (it may show you : --- , so this is not a problem)

.. then click on "Apply Permissions to Enclosed files" , Click after OK .

and retry (don't forget the space you have on the partition)

OK , the problem is to be solved

you are using Xarchiver in this dir: /home/<Username>/Videos

While you have 14.9 Gb free ,,, you have 200Gb of videos , how want you extract that in this little partition.

You have to unpack in another location ; reopen Xarchiver then go to action , extract , but now change the location in the extract tab, cand choose media 204.1GiB. and click OK

The mulit-part rar I am selecting should only produce a 350 MB file. I have tried un-raring to another folder.

I suspect something with groups/users because of the way my homer system was installed. I moved the files to larry and am working there now.

Same problem on both systems. Same problem with all of the multi-part rars I have moved to homer or recently downloaded.

You may have a little problem with the 204.1GiB partition .
1- Open terminal
2- type gksudo nautilus
3- type your password
4- go to /media/sda1/
5- right click on that folder and choose properties
6- in the permission tab, make the permission like in the following picture:

7- (to get --- , you must choose read and write)
8- quit nautilus
9- type sudo umount sda3
10- type the password
11- type sudo mount sda3
you must now be able to add files and create folder by right clicking inside the 204 Gib partition. If not , restart the PC , and do what I told you latly with Xarchiver
