Is something missing on my desktop?

Asked by JOHN

I just installed Netbook Remix on my Toshiba NB205. It seems to be functioning but I may be missing something. I have never seem a screenshot of what a Ubuntu home page looks like. I seem to remeber some mention somewhere of bars at the top and bottom of the screen- don't know what they are called.
On my home screen there is a black bar across the top with the Ubuntu logo in the upper left and some icons and the date/time in the upper right. Is there supposed to be a bar on the bottom like the Windows task bar? If so, it's not there.

Hi! depending on which version of the netbook remix you've installed you might or might not have an application panel (the panel that shows the currently opened applications). In the following links you'll find how it's supposed to look according to the netbook remix version (this should help you see if something is missing):

You probably have this one->Current karmic unr (official):

jaunty unr (official):

Current karmic kunr (official):

Current karmic moblin netbook remix(unofficial):

If you make a fresh installation it's probable that you have the first one installed which is to say "Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 Karmic Koala".

The upper and lower panel are just in the classic Ubuntu desktop they are not present in the netbook edition because they take a lot of space and is not well suited for small screens, the classic ubuntu desktop looks something like this: http://talkbinary.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/ubuntu_804.png
