Since changing computer icon settings after switching on again i have no settings at all except a background

Asked by Michelle

Ok this is extreemly hard to explain as I am not a computer minded person. I have an Asus Eee PC and I discovered how to add a background and change the whole lay out of where the icons can go etc. I went through the normal process, change description etc. and was happy with new colours, a background and a tool bar up the top containing my access to internet, shutdown, EVERYTHING.
The next day after switching it on again now there is nothing, same start up (username, password) but there is nothing but the picture i set to the bakground and one desktop icon i saved THATS IT!
There is nothing to click, can anyone help me do i need to reboot? Changing the settings don't help either.

Thanks,
Michelle

Drop to a terminal by hitting CTRL + ALT + F1, login to your account, and run this command:

rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity

Then run:

reboot
