Application Screens Not Displayed

Asked by Dan Treacy

Just installed Notebook edition 10.04 on a Old Toshiba Tecra 8100 (512 MB RAM). Problem is :
When I select an item e.g. Firefox from the Favourites, the Firefox screen displays momentarily and then disappears. I see the application icon on the top left of the screen and clicking this causes it to display again momentarily.

The problem applies to all applications. I cannot acess anything beyond the main menu screen.

Tried to configure Networking from the icon on the top panel with the same result.

Any help appreciated. I am new to Linux.

Are you fully updated? You can login then press CTRL+ALT+F1 and run:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

then press CTRL+ALT+F7 to get back to the desktop and reboot. May help

Thank you for response. Unfortunately I cannot access internet sites as due to this problem I cannot configure
network. I am using dual boot with XP and have access through the latter.

Try a wired connection. I'm guessing you are having issues with wifi. You could also download the daily Lucid ISO and use it to upgrade your system with.

Thanks actionparsinp. Wired is not an option here. I will look at downloading the LUCID ISO. I assume I can upgrade from another partition i.e. the NTFS.
