No sound for Ubuntu 10.04. Dell mini 10.

I am new to Ubuntu and am having problems with sound. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 for netbooks (Dell mini 10), and i have checked all volume levels and done most basic troubleshooting. The sound worked yesterday when i installed the OS and that makes it all the more confusing.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

In response to David, i thank you for your help, however removing pulseaudio gave me sound, however no control over any volume levels and no access to sound preferences and such.

In response to Mark, thanks also.
I'm not sure if i was to do step 1, either way it only gave me:
"sudo: /etc/init.d/alsa-utils: command not found"

I went onto the next steps anyway, and got this for step 3:

You followed my instructions 100% correctly :-) Well done.

Well, your output shows a problem. I see that an old ALSA configuration file is still active on your PC from a previous version of Ubuntu. You will need to delete it.

Please run the following command to delete the file:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

This file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base should be deleted, because it has now been replaced by the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf file in Ubuntu 10.04

Then reboot and retest sound using headphones and speakers.

If that does not help, then please execute the following procedure:

The second command should be

sudo /sbin/alsa-utils stop

instead of

sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils stop

And you can use gnome-alsamixer to adjust the volume on the different audio channels (Master, PCM, Mic, etc.....)
