My netbook flashes white at startup, on and off. there is no recovery mode when i press escape.

Asked by andrew popalis

I have an Eee PC netbook with ubuntu installed. Today I attempted to start up the netbook and the wallpaper is visible but the screen flashes on and off with a white(ish) color. When I attempt to restart in recovery mode, I press the "ESC" key but I do not have a recovery mode option. What do I do?

I had this and ended up having to boot to recovery root console and deleting the ~/.g* and ~/.config folders. This will pretty much remove all the configs for gnome and many other apps but you will get a desktop.

"boot to recovery root console" is a little technical for me. what does this mean?
