Can't half-maximize windows

Asked by Brad Buchanan

Since last week, I've lost the ability to half-maximize windows in Unity. I used to snap windows to the left or right half of the screen using Ctrl+Super+[left or right arrow key]. I can't do this anymore, and can't find any place to restore it as an option.

It used to be right in the hotkeys overlay you got by holding the super key; see screenshot https://launchpadlibrarian.net/272922884/ubu.jpg from bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity8/+bug/1602628

Now it's not there: https://www.dropbox.com/s/t0p3lbnvr4gog5i/shortcuts.png?dl=0

I've also noticed that windows don't snap to full-height if dragged against the top of the screen like they did before, and I'm also experiencing this bug about keyboard shortcuts for switching workspaces not working: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1619886

I'm on Xenial - beyond that I'm not really sure what diagnostics to provide here. I believe this behavior started with a regular update. It seems possible that all of these changes are by design, but if so I can't find them in any changelog.

Anyone else experiencing this, or know what's going on?

I've since learned a few things.

1. I'm running Unity 7.4.0, compiz 0.9.12.2, so I'm not sure if this (unity8) was the right place to post this question - but it was the closest thing I could find, likely to notify interested maintainers. I hope that's okay.

2. My question was partially answered on AskUbuntu - apparently the "Grid" plugin was automatically disabled in a recent update. Installing compizconfig-settings-manager and manually re-enabling the Grid plugin (and resolving some key conflicts with the "General Options" area) restored both the Ctrl+Super+(Left/Right) behavior and the window-resize when dragged to screen edge. It also put the related hotkeys back into my hotkey overlay.

I'd still like to know what change disabled the Grid plugin (which has been enabled by default since I got this computer a year ago). It's not very user-friendly to quietly disable a feature that requires downloading a separate control panel to re-enable.
