no title bar, no menu bar, no launcher bar, 16.04

Asked by steven riddle

no idea how this happened but i no longer have the launcher bar anywhere, and the bar above where the clock was and where i'd shut down or restart etc is also gone. the shortcut key alt+tab to switch between applications no longer works. any application i am able to open no longer has a menu bar or title bar or buttons to min/maximize or close the app. i can only access the web now (via firefox) via a weblink in a document on the desktop, likewise all applications can only be started via their output-files. i am able to access the terminal but only by right-clicking the desktop, no shortcut-keys work. i've (sudo) rebooted a number of times, same deal, altho last time (after rebooting) just before the login screen appeared, i was briefly able to see the top bar and the clock but the screen flickers, the login box appears with no clock etc and all is as before: no bars to navigate, no alt+tab, etc.

Does the system have a make and model?
If you boot an older kernel is it OK?

dell inspiron 15 5000 series (5552)

some other details perhaps germane: intel pentium cpu N3700 @ 1.60-1.84GHz, 4GB RAM, 64-bit O/S, x64-based processor

recently purchased 2015 model late may this year, i inveigled the admin for the ubu-maryland-loco-team to install ubu 16.04 alongside the windows 10 home 2015 as a dual-boot just to try it out. haven't used the windows part till i lost the various bars on ubu.

i have no idea how i would boot from an older kernel.

so i figured out how to boot from an older kernel using the dual-boot option "advanced options for ubuntu" altho i had no idea what i was doing exactly i tried the regular, the upstart, and the recovery options for more than one older kernel but the only difference was i had the bar above (clock, etc.) visible at login. after login, each & every time same story: no bars anywhere. i am still able to use ubuntu if i'm okay with the severely limited functionality. for now, after 7 years apart, i'm reconciling myself to windows 10. it isn't easy or pleasant but it's what works for now.
