How is the Desktop started on Ubuntu 16.04

Asked by tomdean

I have been looking for the sequence of starting the Ubuntu 16.04 desktop, say, from init.

Where is this documented?

That description is either too vague or wrong.
For example, it refers to /Ubuntu-16.04/usr/lib/systemd/system, but,

boot catalog network user user-generators

There is no system directory.

Using ps, I see that lightdm and friends seem to start about 100
processes. Where startx and friends start 20.
