But I got stuck on 12.10. first my side and tool bars vanished then when I got my terminal open with ctrl alt T I upgraded to 13 but it says upgraded complete but with errors then I rebooted and my system opened up on 12.10 and with no screen! black. so no bars and no screen at all. All I see is my mouse. so I am lost. please help. I just want my system up to the latest supported version with no issues.

Id suggest a clean install of 14.04

There is no Ubuntu 13. There is 13.04 and 13.10

You can easily test Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in a LiveCD or LiveUSB session to test if all the hardware works correctly in 14.04 LTS before committing to a clean install. That way, the risk of things going wrong, is minimal.

Can you help with this problem?
