Ubuntu 12.02 Can I take off Unity and go back to Gnome?

Asked by Nolan

Unity has been giving me several problems. Windoes opening under the top title bar and without buttons so I can't close them.

Is ther a fix for this? I have reset Unity several times and did gconftool --recursive.

If there is not fix, can I peel off Unity and use the former desktop ebvironment?

At first you should be aware that there is no Ubuntu 12.02. There are 12.04 and 12.10.

Also the buttons for maximized windows you are missing are hidden and will be shown when you hover the mouse over the top bar or press F10.

It did not work for me. It did show a menu but not the buttons. I fixed it using a Unity reset and changing the theme.

I think what the op is refering to is when the window spawns in non full screen with the buttons hidden by the top bar. I fix this by going into workspace switcher and dragging the window down. To install classic gnome you can use sudo apt-get install gnome-panel, this can then be selected using the icon by your username on the login screen. I think the package name for gnome 3 is gnome-shell, therefore meaning it can be installed with sudo apt-get install gnome-shell.

If it's gnome classic your looking for gnome-shell isn't perfect, you may wish to look at the MATE (a fork of gnome 2) project from linux mint.
