Cannot see a start bar after logging in.

Asked by Tucker Harbaugh

So I installed Ubuntu 12.10 last night and it works fine. I can boot it up and it shows me the login screen, and I can see the top bar. After I log ito my account the top bar goes away, and all I see is the background and the mouse. I thought maybe I didn't do something in the installation, so I started over again. Same problem. How can I fix this problem?

In my case I have to click on Firefox Eeb Browser before I can see the top line with File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks Tools and Help. Is that what you are looking for??

There is no top bar in the default install of Ubuntu 12.10. The user interface was changed to Unity with 11.10. This has a side bar instead.

The manual is here http://ubuntu-manual.org/downloads

Many people prefer it to the old user interface so give it a try before deciding if you like it or not.

If not you can get almost the same user interface as 10.04 for example however by opening a terminal CTRL+ALT+T and entering
---------------------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get install gnome-panel
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Once its installed log out then back in again selecting "Gnome Classic" from the start-up screen.

I think he is reffering to the top bar containing the power options and file edit view etc, it sounds like the side bar is also gone as well. It's that old only a desktop background issue.

Can you help with this problem?
