Since I reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, the left side panel stays out. It used to go away when the mouse was off of it. How do I get it to hide and also to come out when the mouse is in the top left corner of the screen?

I just wanted to change my desktop background and there is also a tab to control the panel. So now the panel only comes out when the mouse is in the left top corner of the screen. I had gone to Appearance to do this.
