After install Ubuntu desktop 12.10 it boot in a a purplish/redish screen...

Asked by tim

I have tried installing several times, but thus far have been unsuccessful. I am running an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ with 1GB of ram. It has on board graphics, NVidia is all i know.

When I try to boot it after install i get a purplish/redish screen, then it goes blank and I get some errors.

Failed to set mode CRTC [drm:drm_crtc_helper_set_config]

If I take the hard drive out and connect it to another computer, it will boot through just fine. That is why I cannot figure out what is wrong.

Any clues?

PS: I never get a screen that I can click, type, or otherwise put in any options.

Your computer specs are little poor for Ubuntu 12.10 .
1GB RAM , AMD athlon x64 , integrated Nvidia card.. hmm , even if you manage to install correctly the Ubuntu 12.10 , you will disappointed by the overall performance.

I suggest you to try a lighter version of Ubuntu. If you want the Unity environment , then try Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
Ubuntu 12.04 will be supported until April 2017 unlike 12.10 where support will end in 18months (from now)

Ubuntu 12.04 has an Environment called "ubuntu-2d" . It is the same as Unity , but more light and is not use 3D acceleration.

Download 12.04LTS from here => http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/ (32bit Desktop CD).

After a successful installation you have to choose from the login screen the appropriate environment "ubuntu-2d"
Have a look at these pictures.
