No Launchpad to open applications

Asked by Brian S

I installed Ubuntu 12.1 on a flash drive in order to test it out prior to actuall install on PC. I've also installed on a laptop! Both times, the result was it did not install a lot of the OS. I just may not know but shouldnt there be a taskbar of some sort? Something else is wrong too. When I finally found the internet browser app, try to open menu in upper part of window and it won't let mouse select anything. you have to open menu with mouse then arrow down to highlight then press enter to open functions of menus. Please tell me this is something i'm doing wrong. Or please help to resolve. Want to learn but can't find instructions for dummies.

Just this would have done:
Adapter Type Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller, Intel Corporation compatible

The rest is useless.

Have you tried the boot option:

nomodeset

Wasn't sure what other, if any, info you might need to know. If you mean did I boot from flash drive then yes. If you mean something else you will have to clarify. Ubuntu is installed on flash drive as if it were a hard drive. Or so I thought. I followed instructions from Ubuntu.com.

Sincerely,
        Brian.

That's fine, sometimes the Intel GPU chipset has an issue with the kernel display timings and the option helps

Can you help with this problem?
