The default desktop now uses Unity. This does not have a top menu but instead uses the Dash a series of icons down the right hand side. I personally am not very keen on it but others seem to like it.

Take a look at the manual here:

http://ubuntu-manual.org/downloads

Try it out before you dismiss it. If you don't like it however you can get back to something similar to the desktop in 10.04LTS as follows

Open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and enter the following

sudo apt-get install gnome panel

Next time you boot up on the login screen next to the user name and just above the password box there is a circular icon. Click on it and this will list the available desktop environments select "Ubuntu Classic" and login. Not identical to the old desktop but a lot more familiar

If you make a fresh Ubuntu user, is it the same when you log in as the new user?

But I logged in as guest user, all I got was a blank screen with what
looked like the default walpaper.

Unity desktop did not exist. I could not get to any programs. I tried
your suggestion and it worked, I now have a desktop I can use.
Would it be possible to load the Unity desktop like I did with Gnome?

There is no status bar in 12.10 its been replaced by the dash a set of icons down the left hand edge of the screen.
does it look like this?

http://www.design-by-izo.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Ubuntu-Ubunity-Screenshot-3.png

If yes then that is normal. If not what do you see?

Take a look at the manual here:

http://ubuntu-manual.org/downloads

There was a typing error in my original post if you want to get back to the old desktop the instructions should be:

Try it out before you dismiss it. If you don't like it however you can get back to something similar to the desktop in 10.04LTS as follows

Open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and enter the following

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

Note additional hyphen.

If you need extra help don't be afraid to ask. The more information you can provide the easier it is for us to help

Thanks, installing gnome panel worked out my similar (i think) problem!

But I somehow managed to create a fresh user, and this one has the launcher and top bar intact.
